New Delhi: Residents of Delhi-NCR and several parts of northern India were startled early Monday morning as a strong earthquake shook high-rise buildings, forcing many to rush outdoors in fear. The tremors were recorded at 5:36 AM IST, with the epicenter located at Dhaula Kuan, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
The earthquake, measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale, was classified as moderate but felt stronger due to its shallow depth of just 5 km. This shallow-depth earthquake intensified the shaking, making it more noticeable and alarming for residents, particularly those in multi-story buildings.
“It is called a shallow-depth earthquake, hence people felt the effect strongly. The panic was a natural reaction,” NCS Director OP Mishra explained. He further clarified that the earthquake was not caused by plate tectonic movements but rather due to “in situ material heterogeneity,” meaning it resulted from local geological conditions rather than large-scale tectonic shifts.
As the tremors subsided, authorities confirmed that no significant damage to property or loss of life had been reported. However, minor cracks were observed in some buildings, particularly in older structures. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other emergency services remain on alert in case of any aftershocks or additional seismic activity.
Mishra also noted the possibility of aftershocks, predicting that minor tremors of around 1.0 to 1.2 magnitude could follow. He urged residents to remain calm and follow standard safety protocols in case of future tremors.
Delhi, which is situated in Seismic Zone IV, is prone to earthquakes due to its underlying geological formations. This latest event has once again raised concerns about the city’s preparedness for larger seismic activities.
Meanwhile, social media was flooded with messages from residents who experienced the tremors, with many sharing videos and photos of swaying chandeliers and rattling furniture. Experts advise people to stay alert and ensure that emergency preparedness measures, such as securing heavy objects and identifying safe spots in homes and offices, are in place.
