Mumbai/Bengaluru: Zerodha CEO Nikhil Kamath recently took to social media to highlight alarming air quality levels across India, debunking his previous assumption that air pollution was primarily a Delhi-centric issue occurring only in winter.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Kamath recounted his experience recording an episode of the WTF podcast with entrepreneur Bryan Johnson in a sea-facing apartment in Bandra, Mumbai. During the session, he was taken aback by the Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of over 160, significantly exceeding the safe limit. “If the AQI was this high in Bandra, just imagine the levels in the more crowded parts of the town,” Kamath remarked.
Following this revelation, Kamath acquired an AQI meter for his company’s office in JP Nagar, Bengaluru—an area known for its relative tranquility. To his shock, the device displayed a reading exceeding 120. “Imagine how much worse it might be in the busier parts of the city. What makes matters trickier in Bengaluru is the dust from the ongoing construction boom and poor roads,” he observed.
Kamath further highlighted the stark contrast between air quality in India and in Western countries. He pointed out that most regions in the US and Europe enjoy AQI levels below 50, significantly healthier compared to urban India’s deteriorating air conditions.
The entrepreneur’s comments have ignited discussions on social media about the need for stronger policies to combat air pollution in Indian cities. With increasing urbanization and infrastructural development, experts have called for immediate interventions to tackle rising pollution levels and ensure better air quality for citizens.
